ADVANCE Research Challenge Grants

The New York University NSF Advance Challenge Grants are intended to provide seed funds to women scientists to conduct new projects to enhance their ability to compete successfully for external funding.

ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to full-time faculty with appointments in Biology, the Center for the Study of Human Origins, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neural Science, Math, Psychology, and Physics. Special consideration will be given to proposals from junior and mid-career faculty. Previous recipients of NSF Advance Research Challenge Awards are ineligible to compete.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Successful proposals will define a new project for which preliminary data can be obtained within a one-year period; provide a self-contained account of what will be done; demonstrate the likelihood of a significant contribution to the field; and show strong potential to attract external support. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding scholarly promise and ability to successfully undertake the project.

REVIEW PROCESS
Proposals are reviewed by an ad hoc committee appointed by the NYU ADVANCE PAID Steering Committee. The review committee will be composed of senior faculty across multiple disciplines. The Steering Committee makes the final determination based on award recommendations of the review committee. Decisions are expected to be made in July/August and will be conveyed to applicants and school/departmental officials.

REPORTING
All award recipients are asked to report on the outcomes of their research. These reports support the continuation of this funding mechanism, which facilitates research and helps to generate larger research initiatives.

Lay Reader Summary
(Up to 1 page)
A summary written to be understandable by the educated general public.

Project Statement
(Up to 3 pages including any pictures, graphs and tables plus bibliography)

Proposals previously submitted to the NYU - NSF ADVANCE Program should summarize in one paragraph how the present proposal differs from past proposals and/or addresses reviewers’ comments. This summary paragraph will not count toward page limitations.

Budget
A list of costs and a narrative justification, including a brief explanation of the responsibilities of project personnel. Funds may be requested for equipment, supplies, travel, graduate students, and research and technical staff, including their salary and fringe benefits or tuition remission.

Curriculum Vitae
(Up to 5 pages)
Include honors, professional associations, papers and publications for the past 5 years.

Current and Pending Support
List of current support and pending support. Include external support as well as merit-based awards from University grant and challenge fund programs. List title, project period, direct costs for current year, and sponsor.
