ADVANCE Diversity Science Research Grants

The New York University NSF ADVANCE Diversity Science Research Grant is intended to provide seed funds to women social, behavioral and education scientists to conduct new projects that seek to explore the reasons why women are underrepresented in the STEM fields. Projects appropriate for funding consideration include (but are not limited to) case-control program evaluation of pedagogical strategies to engage and retain women in the STEM fields at any educational level, statistical analysis of the determinants of successful math and science achievement among women, psychometric evaluation, and anthropological studies of naturalistic learning environments as they may affect the success of women. Funding is not available for actual interventions.

ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to full-time faculty with appointments in any social science discipline in any school at NYU. Special consideration will be given to proposals from junior and mid-career faculty. Previous recipients of NSF ADVANCE Diversity Science Research Grants are ineligible to compete.

AWARD
One to two awards will be made in this funding cycle, the total of which will not exceed $10,000.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Successful proposals will define a new project for which preliminary data can be obtained within a one-year period, provide a self-contained account of what will be done, and demonstrate the likelihood of a significant contribution to the field. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding scholarly promise and the ability to successfully undertake the project.

REVIEW PROCESS
Proposals are reviewed by an ad hoc committee appointed by the NYU ADVANCE Steering Committee. The review committee will be composed of senior faculty across multiple disciplines. The Steering Committee makes the final determination based on award recommendations of the review committee. Decisions are expected to be made in Summer 2010 and will be conveyed to applicants and school/departmental officials.

REPORTING
All award recipients are asked to report on the outcomes of their research. These reports support the continuation of this funding mechanism, which facilitates research and helps to generate larger research initiatives.
