ADVANCE Dependent Care Travel Grants

The ADVANCE Dependent Care Travel program provides financial assistance to primary caregivers in the scientific fields to help defray dependent care costs associated with traveling to a professional conference or meeting to advance their academic careers. This is a pilot initiative administered by the Office of the Dean for Science.

ELIGIBILITY
The ADVANCE Dependent Care Travel support is limited to full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members in the departments participating in the NSF ADVANCE-PAID Program (Biology, the Center for the Study of Human Origins, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neural Science, Mathematics, Psychology, or Physics) who are the primary caregivers for their dependents.

A dependent is defined as 1) a child, newborn through 12 years of age (or any physically or mentally disabled child under the age of 18 who is unable to care for himself or herself), who resides with the faculty member and for whom the faculty member provides primary support, or 2) a disabled adult/elder (spouse, registered same sex domestic partner, parent, parent-in-law, or grandparent) who spends at least eight (8) hours per day in the faculty member's home and for whom the faculty member has responsibility.

AWARD
The maximum amount available for each award is $1,000. Examples of eligible expenses include: after-hours care at an alternate location, hiring a bona fide caregiver, travel expenses related to transporting a child and/or caregiver to a conference location, extra dependent care at home while a faculty member is traveling, or onsite care at a meeting.  Approval of the grant will be given prior to travel, but payments of these grants will be made post-travel as additional compensation through the regular payroll system. Funding for this type of award is considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service.

Awards are made to only one NYU faculty member per household.  Therefore, two faculty members from the same household cannot apply.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Awards are based on need, appropriateness of the proposed use of funds, and the significance of the meeting/conference and its level of importance in the professional field.

REPORTING
All award recipients are required to submit a short written report to the Program Director summarizing the outcome of the travel and how it contributed to their professional development and academic career advancement.

APPLICATION
The program has two rounds for application and support. The annual application deadlines are:

March 1 for travel from July 1 through December 31
October 1 for travel from January 1 through June 30

Before you undertake your travel, you must complete and submit an application, a copy of an acceptance letter or conference program, and proof of your relationship to the dependent (i.e., birth certificate or verification from the NYU Benefits Office) to advance@nyu.edu.  Awardees will be notified within one month of the application deadline.  Awardees must submit proof of expenses in order to receive payment of the award.
